At the Microsoft Ignite conference, I visited one of the talks that Jerry Nixon and Christine Matheney, Microsoft Developer Evangelists, were giving on Live Tiles and Notifications in Windows 10. During the session, Nixon said to the audience:

This doesn’t come as a surprise however, after earlier in the year, it was stated that Microsoft were planning on moving Windows to a service based model. This doesn’t mean that Windows is being discontinued, it just means that Microsoft are going to start heavily focusing on bringing great new content to their Windows OS more frequently than they have before.
This model will be great for Windows application developers, like myself, who are targeting the new Universal Windows Platform knowing that our applications will always work on every Windows device. If you want to check out the session from Jerry Nixon, check it out here:
